| THERAPEUTIC USE EXEMPTIONS |
| WADA has published an International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE), which describes the process for an athlete to request the use of a required medication that is prohibited. Please review the WADA TUE information or call (719) 785-2045. |
Therapeutic Use Exemption
(TUE, Standard Exemptions)
This standard TUE does not apply to the four beta-2 agonists which can be used for asthma or exercise induced asthma or for corticosteroids used by inhalation or local injection, which require an Abbreviated TUE. The athlete should submit an application for a TUE no less than 21 days in advance of a competition. For beta-2 agonists other than the four which can be used with the abbreviated form, a standard TUE is required for use in- or out-of-competition. |
| In the case of a true medical emergency requiring the use of a prohibited substance, the athlete should proceed with treatment and then submit all the medical data on an emergency basis for consideration of approval for the use. The decision is made after the treatment is initiated. A full description of the medical situation that required the prohibited substances(s), all medications administered, the dose of each medication, and the length of time of administration of each medication must be included with the emergency request. |
| Therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) may be requested for the use of an otherwise prohibited substance and for which an Abbreviated TUE is not permitted. |
| Assistance with the preparation and submission of the standard TUE may be obtained from the U.S. Olympic Committee Division of Sports Medicine (719) 866-4668 or by calling the Drug Reference Line [(800) 233-0393 or (719) 785-2045]. |
| A standard TUE will only be considered following the receipt of a fully completed application form and all relevant documents. A standard TUE is not effective until permission to use the substance has been received in writing following review. |
| The World Anti-Doping Code requires that a standard TUE be submitted for the use of insulin for the treatment of insulin-dependent diabetes. |
| An Athlete may not apply to more than one Anti-Doping Organization for a TUE. The application must identify the Athlete's sport and, where appropriate, discipline and specific position or role. |

Abbreviated Therapeutic Use Exemption
(Note: Some sports have specific requirements for submitting an Abbreviated TUE. It is the athlete's responsibility to know the Abbreviated TUE requirements for their sport. For example, all Track and Field athletes must follow the IAAF Exemption procedures as described on the IAAF web site.) |
| WADA established an Abbreviated TUE process, which applies only to in- or out-of-competition use of certain Beta-2 agonists (formoterol, salbutamol, salmeterol and terbutaline) by inhalation and in-competition use of glucocorticosteroids by inhalation, local or intra-articular injection, or iontophoresis. Topical use of corticosteroids is allowed. |
| You must comply with the Abbreviated TUE process in advance of competing while using any of the medications which require an Abbreviated TUE be on file. |
| In the case of a true medical emergency requiring the use of a substance that requires an Abbreviated TUE, you may submit all of the medical data on an emergency basis using the standard TUE form. |
- All submissions to USADA must be on the Abbreviated TUE form, completely, legibly and accurately filled out, and in accord with Section 8 of the WADA International Standard for TUEs.
- Remember that a new Abbreviated TUE must be submitted if a medication requiring an Abbreviated TUE is changed.
- The IF is responsible for the receiving and reviewing the Abbreviated TUEs from International-Level Athletes and those who compete internationally.
- USADA is responsible for receiving and reviewing the Abbreviated TUEs from the National-Level Athletes and those who compete nationally.
